The Reverend Battle Beasley

Dear People of God,

By the time you read this we will have had a stupendous workday afternoon,

Daughters of the King quiet day will be over,

Blessing of the animals taken place and pledge cards will have been passed out,

just to name a few of the activities that happen around here.

Spiritual formation time has started once again and we are gearing up for Room In the Inn once

a month thru March!

And what about the month to come with a Labyrinth workshop and the Best of Fall Fest to say

nothing of our regular worship, study, prayer and fellowship.

My goodness is it just me getting older or is there just too much to do and not enough time to do

it in?

There is a story about all the animals getting together and complaining about how much

humans take from them. The cow says they take all my milk {and some eat us too!}, the chickens

say they take all our eggs the fish say they harvest us in great nets, the horse, donkeys, mules

elephants and camels say they use us to carry all their heavy loads. On and on it goes until

finally the turtle speaks up, "I have something they very much need but they never take". All the

animals wonder what could turtle possibly have, "time" says the turtle.

I am never in a hurry yet I get all things done that need doing each day and that is what humans

most need. With all that the church has to offer and to invite you to participate in, with all each of

us has going on in our own lives, family, work, play.

Sometimes there just seems to be too many demands upon us and not enough of our time to

respond. I urge you to take time for yourself and God, trusting as you do that that God will direct

you towards the people and things you are to do and will relieve you of your guilt about all the

rest.

God really does not want to burn us out, as we say about our financial stewardship, give joyfully

and if you cannot at this time give joyfully please wait until you are able or called to do so.

God's Peace,

Battle  +

DUBOSE CONFERENCE CENTER

Every now and then, it can be interesting to reflect on our past,to

recognize common parallels throughout history.  Even though the human population completely changes

(every 100 years or so) our faith and ideals tend to remain as a common strain throughout time.

DuBose Conference Center has been on the National Register of Historic Places since December,

1980.  A proposal was submitted to the State of Tennessee Preservation Board by Mr. Britt Casteel, and

we were voted into the National Registry a few months later.  Of course our historical beginnings were one

reason for the submissions, as well as the unique architectural design of our historic buildings.

Archbishop William Haskell

DuBose had a vision of starting an institution that emphasized spiritual development, built spiritual values,

and instilled cultural enhancement in a serenely beautiful setting for prayer and contemplation for the

betterment of society.  DuBose Conference Center still strongly reflects those historic ideals.

For those of you who are not already familiar with DuBose, we are your Episcopalian, full-service

conference center including lodging, meals, and conference rooms.  We also have two beautiful chapels,

two ropes courses, bonfire sites and play areas.  We welcome you to come and see us anytime!

We welcome any church (any denomination), any civic or community leadership group, any non-profit

organization, any cultural organization, any private or public school, any type of youth organization, any

camp, family retreat, and even  weddings.  For any type of conference, retreat or gathering, we

welcome all!

Our summer is starting to get full,  however we still have some dates available.  If you are interested in

planning any activity for your church, for your individual workplace or any membership in a community

organization, we welcome you to call or contact us soon.  We are already scheduling activites for the fall

and winter of 2003.  We will warmly appreciate your choosing us as your location, and will work with you

down to the last small detail to ensure that your stay is successful.  That is very important to us!  We look

forward to hearing from you.

                                         Warmest regards,

DuBose Conference Center

HUMAN RECALL!!

The maker of all human beings is recalling all units manufactured, regardless of make or year, due to serious

defect in the primary and central component of the heart. This is due to a willful malfunction in the original

prototype units called Adam and Eve, resulting in the reproduction of the same defect in all subsequent units.

This defect has been technically termed, "Sub-sequential Internal Non-morality," or more commonly known

as SIN, as it is primarily expressed. Some other symptoms:

a)Loss of direction

b) Foul vocal emissions

c) Amnesia of origin

d) Lack of peace and joy

e) Selfish or violent behavior

f)  Depression or confusion in the mental component

g) Fearfulness

h) Idolatry

i)  Rebellion

The Manufacturer, Who is neither liable nor at fault for this defect, is providing factory authorized repair and

service free of charge to correct this SIN defect. The Repair Technician, Jesus, has most generously offered

to bear the entire burden of the staggering cost of these repairs.  There is no additional fee required. The toll

free number to call for repair in all areas is P-R-A-Y-E-R.  Once connected, please upload your burden of SIN

through the REPENTANCE procedure. Next, download ATONEMENT from the Repair Technician, Jesus,

into the heart component. No matter how big or small the SIN defect is, Jesus will replace it with:

a)  Love

b)  Joy

c)  Peace

d)  Patience

e)  Kindness

f)   Goodness

g)  Faithfulness

h)  Gentleness

i)   Self-control

SECOND HARVEST FOOD BANK

Alison Stovall, Manager of The Emergency Food Box Program has extended an invitation to St. Mark’s to attend

an informal brainstorming meeting on October 7th to discuss better ways for local congregations to meet the needs

of the hungry in the community.  The food supply is dangerously low and there is a dire need for volunteers.  Many

local congregations already have food programs in place but it is becoming increasingly difficult to meet the

needs of everyone who needs help.  There will be two sessions on Tuesday October 7th.  One will be from 10:00 –

11:30 AM and the second one will be from 1:00 – 2:30 PM at the Second Harvest Offices at 331 Great Circle Road.

Please call Alison at 627-1562 if you will be attending.

Kitty McKee has reported that you, the people of St. Mark’s have filled the food barrel in ONE WEEK!!!

This was a challenge from Frank Brannon.  If we did it once, we can do it again!!!  Kitty delivered to the

distribution center at Hamilton United Methodist Church 152 pounds of food valued at $284.00.  A lot of the

food was boxed cereal so the weight is light.  Kitty had two trash bags full with boxed cereal.  Meet the

challenge!! Do it again in ONE WEEK!!

Mom and baby are doing fine but Madison will need to stay in the hospital for 4 – 5 weeks to make sure she can maintain her body temperature and eat.

REMEMBER WHEN THIS WAS YOU?

You cannot know the reason I am here this morning.  It may be as simple as a move to your community, or as complicated as a personal crisis that leads me to seek strength from God.  In either case, I am here.  I will probably remain here and come back to worship with you next Sunday and the Sunday after that if you will do something for me.  Won’t you please…..

Smile at me as I walk in your door.  You are my first impression of the church and this impression will probably stay with me for a long time.

Speak to me during the coffee hour.  I know you want to see your friends and settle that piece of committee business, but I may find it hard to believe that you truly care for “the stranger in your midst

Tell me good things about your church and ministers.  I want to believe that I have come to some place where people love each other and where they are doing something exciting and important for the Lord.

Notice me even if I am not a family. I don’t want to feel invisible just because I am unmarried, a single parent, a teenager or an elderly person.

Talk to me again the second week when I come back – and the third and the fourth.  I am still not a part of your church family. Please don’t feel you have “done your duty” by me just because you made a point of greeting me the first week I was here.

Invite me to become part of some church group or organization.  I need more than worship each Sunday.  I need to know that I am accepted and affirmed by a group of people within the church who know me by my first name and who care about me as an individual.

If you can find it in your heart to do these things for me, I will come back the second Sunday the third and maybe even forever.  I will worship with you.  And I may even join your choir, work on your projects, teach in your Sunday school, tithe to your church and become a highly involved member in your church.  In so doing, I will find my own life immeasurably enriched.

The labyrinth is back!

It has been uncovered of all the grasses of the summer.  It is located just above the parking lot...look for a

directional sign in the near future.

A labyrinth, unlike a maze, has no dead ends.  There is only one path, and while it does have twists and turns, you

can't get lost.  The same path takes you into the labyrinth and out again.  With a labyrinth you don't have to think

or analyze, or solve a problem.  With a labyrinth you just trust that the path will lead you to where you need to

be.  You may use it as a walking meditation.

Battle will be holding a Labrynth Workshop on Saturday, October 18 from 9:00 AM until 12:00 noon
.
